Roughly half of job seekers today report using AI to help craft their resumes. Because this technology helps applicants present themselves more attractively, it also creates a new challenge: verifying what looks good on paper truly reflects a candidate’s experience, skills, and potential. Below are three tips to help accurately gauge the authenticity and quality of candidates:

Focus on Results.
Because AI can use vague language to exaggerate experience, ask for measurable outcomes. Did they increase company revenue by 10%, boost team productivity by 20%, or improve customer satisfaction scores from 82 to 95 year-over-year? These results are a strong indicator of a candidate’s real impact.

Use Assessments.
AI resume tools insert in-demand buzzwords and skills to make candidates more appealing to applicant tracking systems. To verify technical and/or leadership-based skills, consider asking finalists to complete relevant assessments in a controlled setting.

Ask Behavior-Based Questions.
Culture fit is critical to any successful hire, but AI-assisted resumes tend to share a similar tone, making it harder to gauge a candidate’s true personality. Asking behavior-based questions (e.g., “Tell me about a time you had to…”) is a great way to get to know your candidates better while also providing them an opportunity to showcase their leadership, emotional intelligence, and problem-solving skills.
